Adventurous Travels in Cyprus

Exploring the Wild Side of Cyprus

Cyprus may be known for its stunning beaches and rich history, but there’s a whole other side to this Mediterranean island that often goes unnoticed. As an adventurous traveler, I was determined to uncover the hidden gems and adrenaline-pumping experiences that Cyprus has to offer. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. From hiking through rugged landscapes to diving into crystal clear waters, here’s my guide to an adventurous trip to Cyprus.

Hiking in the Troodos Mountains

My journey began in the Troodos Mountains, the highest mountain range in Cyprus. With its rugged terrain and dense forests, it’s a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. I laced up my hiking boots and set out on the Caledonia Waterfalls Trail, a 3.5 km trail that takes you through lush greenery and past stunning waterfalls. The sound of rushing water and the fresh mountain air made for a truly rejuvenating experience. And the best part? The trail ends at the Caledonia Waterfalls, where I took a refreshing dip in the natural pool.

Thrilling Water Sports in Ayia Napa

Next, I headed to the popular beach town of Ayia Napa, known for its vibrant nightlife. But I was more interested in what it had to offer during the day – water sports. I started off with parasailing, where I was lifted high up in the sky, giving me a bird’s eye view of the stunning coastline. It was an exhilarating experience, and the perfect way to kick off my adventure-filled day. Next, I tried my hand at wakeboarding, and let me tell you, it’s not as easy as it looks. But with the help of my patient instructor, I was soon gliding across the crystal clear waters. For the adrenaline junkies out there, there’s also jet skiing and flyboarding available.

Exploring the Underwater World

As a certified scuba diver, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to explore the underwater world of Cyprus. I headed to the Zenobia Shipwreck, one of the top dive sites in the world. This sunken ship lies 42 meters below the surface and is home to an abundance of marine life. Swimming alongside schools of colorful fish and exploring the intricate details of the ship was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If you’re not a certified diver, don’t worry – there are plenty of diving centers in Cyprus that offer beginner courses.

Climbing to the Top of the Rock of Aphrodite

No trip to Cyprus is complete without a visit to the birthplace of the goddess of love – Aphrodite. And what better way to experience it than by climbing to the top of the Rock of Aphrodite, a massive sea stack located on the coast. The hike to the top was challenging, but the panoramic views of the sea and surrounding cliffs were well worth it. Legend has it that if you swim around the rock three times, you’ll be blessed with eternal beauty and love. I may have skipped the swim, but I definitely left feeling rejuvenated and in awe of the stunning landscape.

Off-Roading in the Akamas Peninsula

My final adventure in Cyprus took me to the Akamas Peninsula, a remote and rugged area on the western coast. I joined a jeep safari tour, which took us through rocky terrain, past hidden coves, and to the famous Lara Beach, a protected nesting site for sea turtles. The highlight of the tour was reaching the Avakas Gorge, a narrow canyon with towering rock walls. We hiked through the gorge and even had the chance to rappel down a small waterfall. It was the perfect way to end my adventurous trip to Cyprus.

As I reflect on my time in Cyprus, I can’t help but feel grateful for the amazing experiences I had. From hiking through the mountains to diving into the sea, this island truly has something for every adventurous traveler. So the next time you’re planning a trip, don’t overlook Cyprus – it just might surprise you.
